Open URL

EMBASE.com provides OpenURL and customized linking functionality.

OpenURL is a general technical standard of linking bibliographic products (such as EMBASE.com) to an institute's own full text holdings. The principle is that the bibliographic product (in this case EMBASE.com) generates an 'OpenURL' and this OpenURL is interpreted by a Link Resolver. The link to the relevant full-text article is then created.

Example

Your institute has a subscription to 100 journals from Publisher XYZ. You can access these journals on their electronic full-text platform. The bibliographic records of these journals are also in EMBASE.com. Now that EMBASE.com is OpenURL enabled and provided that you have a Link Resolver or a customized program to generate links, you can link straight from the EMBASE.com record to the full text of these 100 journals.

Requirements for using OpenURL

In order to work with OpenURL there are two requirements:

  • The bibliographic product has to be OpenURL enabled (this means capable of generating URLs conform the OpenURL standard)
  • The subscriber has to have a Link Resolver (such as SFX, LinkFinder Plus, Endeavour, etc) or a customized link resolver program. Link Resolver programs make the actual link between bibliographic product and full text using the OpenURL as input
